Command An Army Player Classes: Assassin, Sword & Shield, Hammer (2026)

Your player character in Command An Army has three classes that determine your personal combat style. The class does not change your troops, only how you fight alongside them.
Quick Answer: What Are the Player Classes?
Command An Army has three player classes: Assassin, Sword & Shield, and Hammer. Your class only changes how your own character fights, not your troops. The class determines your combat style, mobility, and role in battle. Changing class costs 50 Gems.
| Class | Playstyle | Strength | Weakness | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sword & Shield | Balanced melee with block | Blocks incoming hits, safe learning curve | Lower burst damage than Assassin | New players, defensive play, holding points |
| Assassin | Fast flanker with dodge roll (Q) | Quick movement, high DPS, mobile | Low protection if caught in open | Cavalry players, flanking, aggressive play |
| Hammer | Slow, heavy swings | Big hits, more reach per swing | Slowest attack rhythm, lowest DPS | Melee lines, point defense, tank-like play |
How Classes Work
Your player character fights in the middle of your army. The class determines your personal combat abilities, but your troops fight independently based on their own stats and evolution. A Sword & Shield player can still field cavalry units, and an Assassin can use shield infantry. The class is about your personal playstyle, not your army composition.
- Sword & Shield: Block with right-click to reduce incoming damage. Best for learning positioning.
- Assassin: Dodge roll (Q) gives i-frames and repositioning. High skill ceiling, high reward.
- Hammer: Slow but hard-hitting. Each swing has more reach and damage, but you are vulnerable between swings.
Which Class Should You Pick?
If you are new to the game, start with Sword & Shield. The block mechanic keeps you alive while you learn army management and positioning. Once comfortable, try Assassin for faster, more aggressive play. Hammer is for players who prefer a slower, more deliberate combat rhythm with big payoff hits.
| Playstyle | Recommended Class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to the game | Sword & Shield | Block keeps you alive while learning |
| Like flanking with cavalry | Assassin | Dodge roll syncs with mounted combat |
| Play defense and hold points | Sword & Shield or Hammer | Both excel at sustained fighting |
| Prefer big hits over fast attacks | Hammer | Highest per-hit damage, more reach |
Changing Class
You can change your class at any time for 50 Gems (the same cost as one summon on the Standard Banner). Test each class in a few matches before committing. The 50-Gem cost is low enough that experimenting is worthwhile โ most players settle on their preferred class after 2-3 switches.
Class and Army Synergy
While your class does not restrict your army, some combinations are more effective. Sword & Shield pairs well with defensive units like Shieldman and Spartan. Assassin synergizes with fast cavalry like Scout Rider and Lancer. Hammer works well with heavy melee lines that create space for your big hits.
